DE: Vor einigen Monaten kontaktierte mich die liebe Lucy von Sewessential, ob ich mir vorstellen könnte, mit ihrem Online Nähgeschäft einen Blogpost zu erstellen – konnte ich! Für diejenigen, die noch nie von Sewessential gehört haben, handelt es sich um ein Online Nähgeschäft, dass nicht nur tolle Stoffe (darunter ganz viele von John Kaldor!) und Muster (Vogue, McCalls und viele Indie Schnitte) verkauft sondern sich auch auf Nähmaschinen (Janome, Pfaff etc) und Zubehör spezialisiert.

EN: A few months ago, the lovely Lucy from Sewessential contacted me to enquire, whether or not I could imagine myself collaborating on a post – of course I could. For those of you, who haven’t heard of Sewessential, it’s a one stop online haberdashery, that doesn’t just sell beautiful fabrics (JOHN KALDOR I’M LOOKING AT YOU!!!!) Big 4 (Vogue, Simplicity, Butterick and McCalls)and many indie patterns but also has an amazing array of sewing machines (Pfaff, Janome etc) and sewing (machine) essentials.

 

DE: Ich durchforstetet den Online Shop und habe mich dann für den Vogue Schnitt 8577 entschieden und wählte dazu diese gepunktete Popeline. Ich hatte erst vor einigen Monaten ein gepunktetes Marine blaues Kleid entsorgt und hatte nun eine Lücke in meinem Kleiderschrank das dringend gefüllt werden musste. Dieses Hemdblusen Kleid hatte keinen Kragen, dafür richtig große Taschen und einen weiten Rock, perfekt für den Sommer.

EN: Earlier this year, I got rid of a navy blue dress, and now was in desperate need for a replacement. I chose Vogue 8577, a shirt dress without a collar, big pockets and an even bigger skirt, perfect for summer! I chose this polka dot poplin, which was a dream to work with.

DE: Kommen wir zum Schnitt, ich habe mal zusammen geschrieben, was ich alles am Schnitt geändert habe und wie viel Stoff ich tatsächlich verwendet habe. Als ich nämlich auf IG bekannt gab, dass ich dieses Kleid nähen wollte, hatten sehr viele Damen erwähnt, dass sie diesen Schnitt im Lager hatten, sich aber nicht getraut hatten es zu nähen, weil es doch SO VIEL STOFF verbraucht! Ich habe zur Erstellung meines Kleides 3 Meter benötigt (der Stoff war 1.5 Meter breit), und habe Version A  in Größe 12 gewählt. Der Stoff ging sich GENAU aus, übrig blieben nur ein paar kleine Fetzen die für nichts mehr zu gebrauchen waren.

EN: When I announced on IG that I was going to sew this dress, many seamstresses mentioned that they either had this pattern or that they would like to buy it, but were put off by the amount of fabric one needed (3-6 meters!!!), according to the envelope. I can assure you, the amounts are not as terrifying! I chose view A, cut a size 12 and used exactly 3 meters of fabric, that was 60″ wide. I did however need every centimetre!

DE: Ich habe ein Probe-Oberteil genäht, und empfehle es jedem, der Schnitte vom Big 4 (McCalls, Vogue, Butterick und Simplicity) nähen möchte, ich habe das Gefühl, dass die Größen oft variieren. Dort stellte ich fest, dass die Schultern viel zu lang waren und kürzte sie daher um 1.5 inch, auch gefiel mir gar nicht, dass das Rückenteil nicht im Bruch geschnitten wird und habe dies dann an meinem fertigem Kleid geändert. Dafür muss man nur die Nahtzugabe “weg knicken” und dann im Stoffbruch ausschneiden. Laut der Anleitung, soll man das ganze Kleid füttern, was weitere 3 Meter Stoff (!!!) bedeuten würde aber ich kann euch versichern, dies ist überhaupt nicht nötig! Ich habe lediglich nur das Oberteil mit einem weißem Batist aus meinem Lager, gefüttert. Auch soll man zuerst das Oberteil füttern und anschließen den Belegen, der vom obersten Knopfloch bis zum Rocksaum einnähen…. Ich saß vor der Anleitung und habe mich echt gewundert, wer denn auf diese sinnlose Idee gekommen ist… Ich habe den Beleg auf die Länge des Rocks gekürzt und eingenäht, anschließend habe ich dann das gefütterte Oberteil und den Rock (mit angenähtem Beleg) zusammen genäht! GEHT DOCH UND SIEHT SO VIEL BESSER AUS!!!

EN: I sewed a toile before cutting into my fashion fabric, something I would definitely recommend doing, when using a big 4 pattern, I feel like their sizing is not always consistent. The first thing I noticed, was that the sleeves were too long, therefore I shortend them by 1.5 inches. I was also not impressed by the fact, that the yoke and back piece were not to be cut on the fold. The extra seams took away from the clean look of the dress, so I folded the seam allowence down and cut both pieces on the fold. Now, the pattern wants you to line the entire dress using another 3 meters, YOU DO NOT HAVE TO DO THIS! The instructions have you line the dress, by sewing the same bodice and then you’re supposed to sew a facing to both pieces, that start at the top buttonhole and go down the hem of the skirt. I thought this was rather ridiculous, and just lined the bodice, and cut the facing the length of the skirt. I attached the facing to the skirt and then sewed the lined bodice to it! It turned out great, and looked so much better!

DE: Anstatt Schrägband für die Armlöcher zu verwenden, habe ich die Nahtzugabe an der Schulter nach innen geschlagen und dann das Oberteil nach innen gezogen. Das Oberteil und das Futter liegt jetzt mit der richtigen Seiten aneinander, und man kann dann die Nahtzugaben feststecken und zusammen nähen.

EN: Also you’re supposed to finish the arms by using bias binding…. but you’ve already lined the bodice?? WHY? I felt the instructions were kind of silly. I chose a much cleaner finish, by folding the seam allowances to the inside of the shoulder and then pulled the bodice to the inside. The shell and lining fabric are now right sides together and you can pin the armholes and sew the fabrics together. Don’t forget to grade your seams and clip them, I also understitched the lining, so it wouldn’t roll out.

 

DE: Die Knöpfe habe ich aus meinem Lager, die stammen aus den 1960-gern und sind aus Glas. Den Rocksaum habe ich mit der Hand festgenäht, während ich auf Netflix “The Keepers” geschaut haben. Ich bin von dem Schnitt positiv überrascht und hoffe auch andere Näherinnen trauen sich daran, es ist echt ein super Sommerkleid und die Taschen sind einfach der absolute Hingucker.

EN: I used some vintage buttons from my stash and hemmed the skirt by hand while watching The Keepers on Netflix. I quite enjoyed making up this dress, not only does it fill a void in my closet, it is just so nice to wear the big skirt and twirl around with it! I hope other seamstresses give this pattern a go, it’s really lovely! Thank you Lucy for making this happen.
